Nein, ein "vegetarischer Döner", such as you see at Döner shops in the Bundesrepublik. But a falafel in a pita is also nice. That would be more Lebanese than Turkish, so much less common round here. The wildly popular (in the US anyway) tv show by Anthony Bourdain featured the famous Döner shop in Berlin that gets the most credit for having "invented" the Döner-im-Fladenbrot. I saw the German-dubbed version here a while back. Unfortunately, he describes the bread as "Pita" or maybe "Pide", which is simply not true in the case of the former, the latter is questionable at best. A Fladenbrot is thicker, softer, moister, and chewier than pita bread, and gives a completely different effect. If the word was supposed to be "Pide", it's a little confusing, because Pide are usually the pastries filled with spinach, meat, or various other things. A different bread entirely. Except I've also seen references here and there to the bread used in a Döner as being called "Pide". Either way, I can't imagine the German subtitle writer using either word instead of "Fladenbrot". Jetzt habe ich Hunger. To the Weihnachtsmarkt for a "hemp pocket"! |
