No Jos, the system functioned for both the mild and bitter beers. The reason for the demise in mild is a bit of a mystery to me as I was keen mild drinker (incidentally, always lower in alcohol, I think at around 3.5). However, mild was always more popular in the north and midlands and I recall being quite surprised when I moved to London in 1969 that it was quite hard to find. The beer in London at that time was pretty revolting - it's hard to imagine that anyone could have actually liked to fdrink such as Watney's Starlight - unimaginable swill! The only way to make it palatable was to mix it with bottled light or brown ale to produce light and bitter or light and brown. Being a regional speciality, I think that mild suffered as the lighter and stronger ales and, later, lager became popular. It can still be easilty found in the beer drinking capitol of England. |
