To say you can't say one beer is better than another, or better than all others in a group of given beers is to say that trained, certified, and amateur beer judges don't know what they're doing, and this I take exception to. You *can* judge whether one beer is better than another, if you define the judging criteria. And you can say one is a better example of its "style" (or whatever you want to call it) than another one is of its style, even when talking about two different styles. This is how judging works. It all comes down to how you define the judging criteria. Olfactory perception in humans is indeed not 100% calibratible (?), but it is able to be standardised to a reasonable extent. |
