It's a great place to live (for my Frau und mich anyway), but I'd not recommend Erlangen as a base for beer tourism. Some great Döner shops and very, very good Italian restaurants, but not much for beer, unfortunately. I really should write up something better, but I just haven't bothered with it yet...here's something a couple of years old now, but still largely up-to-date: http://erlangernick.freewebsitehosting.com/ Er...a couple of corrections. The Little Dream Café is closed now, moved a few blocks away, and are apparently now a smoker's club or something like that, so I won't be checking out the new location. Hopefully something nice will open up in the old location. I really should check out Im Hinterhaus now after the Rauchverbot to see if they're complying. Café Schaumburg has changed ownership; it's now a great *little* Italian kitchen with the Hoffman http://www.hofmann-bier.de/ beers in bottles. One of our favorite places to eat. Gambrinus has several anti-Rauchverbot posters on their windows; I wouldn't be surprised if they're some sort of smoker's club now...really should poke my head in and see. I've seen ashtrays when I've looked in through the window. There is a new Kitzmann joint at the brewery, as Jos says, and the one time we've been was not particularly rewarding. Franconian food, but somewhat over priced for the quality, and yes, the Kitzmann beers are on tap, but they're so relatively uninteresting...the place is also a little too bland. http://www.braeuschaenke.de/bs/startseite/startseite.php Lunch menü looks good though (Mittagstisch) Erlangen's maybe worth a visit, if one wants to see where the mp3 format was invented or has interest in the story of the Hugenots, but otherwise...eh, the architecture is also perhaps of interest, owing to its much less Catholic influences than other Franconian cities. And the only war damage was to the Nürnberger gate, as a US tank tried to drive through it and damaged it so badly that they just tore it down. Staying in Hirschaid might be worthwhile, at the brewery. I wonder if Forchheimer hotels are that booked up though; the Annafest is very local, I doubt too many people travel to and stay in Forchheim for it. |
