A weekend at the Sandkerwa in Bamberg |

Not many people believed me when I said that I only found out about the Sandkerwa AFTER I'd booked our second trip to Bamberg. Well, believe it or not its true, but I am very glad that I chose dates which coincided with a festival that turned out to be superb. Some photos are posted here: http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=2087984041 We got the late flight from Stansted to Nurnberg last Friday night, which was delayed, so we arrived too late to get to any of the decent beer pubs, so we hit the sack and instead made an early get away for Bamberg, checking into our hotel before midday. For lunch, it was straight to Mahrs Brau, then Keesmann, before heading up to the Spezial keller later in the afternoon. Later on after some food we braved the Saturday evening crowds of the Sandkerwa to sneak onto a table which we were surprised to find empty in the Schlenkerla, then we had a beer in the middle of a massive throng outside - a super keller bier from St Georgen. Next day we spent most of the day at the Sandkerwa - crowds were a bit more manageable, the atmosphere was superb, and the beer was plentiful. Beers from Br Goller, Reckendorf and Hummel was all great treats. Quick visit to Wilde Rose Keller late afternoon was followed by the evening back at the Sandkerwa, this time we had yet more superbly fresh beer from Spezial and then Mahrs. Nice of them to provide handy beer stalls in the centre of town! Next day Marcus offered us a lift to Nurnberg, so we jumped at the chance of going by the scenic route - in this case Br Schwarzes Kreuz in Eggolsheim, which was a superb locals' bar where they were rather surprised to see tourists; then our lunch stop - Br Pfister in Weigelshofen (where both food and beer were excellent); and finally Br Goldener Lowe in Drugendorf. We were left back by our very kind driver in the centre of Nurnberg, where we'd time for sausages and more beer before catching our late evening flight back to London. Another great weekend in Bamberg. I can't wait to get back:) Cheers! J |
