 Mager's black lager has a very full body and is, to my opinion, perhaps the best of its kind.

 I'm going over my notes and pictures from our 2002 trip. Pottenstein is a beautiful place. Mager was the only brewery open when we were there - here are my notes. Well lit pub, ceramic panels on doors with brewery scenes. Dunkles: very dark - chestnut, quite dry, hoppy, roasty, good malt/hop balance, very smooth - well married flavors. Pils: good malt backbone, light hop aroma, some lingering spicy hop - Hallertauer, light straw color. Hell - honey malt aroma, dark straw.

 Charly and me sampled the Vollbier hell and the dark beer. Helles: Very dry, crisp, cereal taste. Nice! Dark beer: Basically similar, but with an interesting malty sweetness. Again, very dry. Good brewery!

 I visited on a busy saturday afternoon and ordered the dunkles. It was OK, nothing special. All of the locals were drinking helles. None of them ordered the dunkles. Sauerbraten was very good.

 Stopped by here in late November 2009 on a Saturday afternoon at 17:00 and it was shut (as was its neighbor). Very disappointed. The whole town felt dead. It looks like the summer is the time to visit.
