Another alternative might be a bike rental. Assuming the area is not too hilly and the weather is good, you should be able to easily bike from one village to another. Depending on where you are starting from, a bike could also work when a bus schedule doesn't. Last fall, four of us middle-aged people managed to easily do 7-8km per hour (on fairly flat terrein). That doesn't count stopping for beer and food or photos.
