Interesting Fred but what about Galway? I'm looking to spend a day there soon as my strength is rapidly returning. It's a real problem trying to break the Guinness/lager 'cult'. I suppose that conservatism rules everywhere, which is why I'm a little sceptical about Nick's proposals. Most drinkers in Ireland don't even know about alternatives to Guinness or the so-called lagers, while real ale is a completely unknown concept (as it is to many elsewhere). Most Irish people who go to the UK nowadays drink either Guinness or lager. However, that was not the case in the past simply because they were not available. When I was in the Black Sheep in January, I met some friends. They were really quite afraid of trying the cask ales, though one of two did venture to try some of the kegged versions. Someone had a porter that was on offer (it was quite a pleasant drink) but said that they didn't like it because it didn't taste like Guinness! As I said before, Beamish and Murphy's tried hard to break the Guinness cult but were largely unsuccessful. Beamish were offering trial kegs free to landlords but most were unwilling to take them. A pub owning friend tried but found he couldn't even give the stuff away, even though, IMHO, it is a much nicer drink than Guinness. If I was younger, I'd have a go at taking a bar (as you say, they are freely available and cheapish now) and selling real ale at really competitve prices. I'm sure that it would work.
