Bamberg -several places not open

On our bike ride this summer, a good many of our beer stops were at "US Style Brewpubs" and with one exception, the beer was mediocre at best. As with Ambräusianum, they just don't have the tankage to lager their beer long enough. And usually it's because they don't have the funds (though with Ambräusianum space is also a consideration) The exception was Brauhaus Goldener Engel just outside of Mainz (in Ingelheim). There clearly was a *lot* of money behind this place. The beer were quite good (even better at the time because we were in the middle of the "Bittburger Desert" :) ) A family place that has been in business for decades (or centuries!) can amortize the equipment costs over a much longer time. And I'll bet if you did a lab analysis of US Brewpub "Lagers" many of them are brewed with top fermented yeasts. Not all for sure, but I'd guess a high percentage of the ones at smaller brewpubs. It was also interesting, that in Vienna the brewpub quality was higher.
