Bamberg trip highs and some lows.

Just wanted to share my experiences of my recent trip to Bamberg. First port of call for me was Cafe Abseits where I met Gerhard. My short stay was an enjoyable one and got some really useful tips regarding cycle routes, breweries and beer. Really enjoyed the Monchsambacher lager and hell bock from either Huppendorfer or Monsch, this being one of the nicest bocks I have ever had the pleasure of trying all be it from a bottle and would love to try this vom fass one day. The highlight was the Fischer rauchbeer! tasted gorgeous and somehow reminded me of a stout come porter but maybe the bock and previous beers were affecting my taste buds. I returned there Saturday night feeling a little unwell due to the excesses over the previous days but got to sample some Weiherer hell bock but this was not as nice as the Monk bock but still acceptable and got through 4 bottles.I will definately be returning shortly and will stay longer next time! Back to the rest of my first day.I did the usual Bamberg breweries. Tried the Krausen in Schlenkerla but found this a little average but the Martzen was up to scratch as per norm. What dissapointed me was how rude the staff there were. I know they are busy and have to deal with lots of tourists but when taking my beer outside for a cigarette was shouted at in front of other guests by a very unhappy waitress that this was not allowed and I had to pay there and then.Visited Klosterbrau and found the staff really friendly and sampled a pils, schwartz and braun beer. Again found these a little average with the pils coming out on top. Next stop was Fassla and Spezial wher I enjoyed the beers on offer there, Spezial being a rauchbeer more to my taste and the Fassla gold pils was good. Keesman next and I must say after reading mixed reviews regarding there beers the pils was one of the nicest I tried in Bamberg and surprised me. Mahrs was also good but I foud Keesman better. On to Greifenklau where i must say i enjoyed the lager beer but the Weizen came out on top there really hitting the spot on the long walk up the hill to the pub. Second day i visited Forcheim and did the four breweries there. In no particular order at Neder I enjoyed the Schwarze Anne, Pils and the keller beer with the later coming out on top. Freindly staff and given a free schnapps as a thank you for visiting. Next Brauerei Greif where i enjoyed the Hell and edel pils but the highlight here was the weizen which had a nice sour finish to it! Again friendly staff and given a free glass as a momento.Onto Eichhorn and I must say this was one of the nicest pils I tried over my stay. It was really floral and aromatic with an underlying honey taste. Finally Hebendanz where I enjoyed the Pils but best here was the Export hell. Third day was spent walking around Bamberg and enjoying the local sights stopping off at the bootshaus for some refreshments. Tried all the Weiher range and they were all good. Ate food at Alt Ringeln and enjoyed the Haxe but the beer was most forgetable (haus beer)flat and almost told them to take it back. Very breif but must say cant wait to return again and take in some more of the surrounding villages and breweries.Just wish I had had the time to bring home a few crates to keep me going until next time.
