I blame oxygen from antique bottling equipment. See bottled vs. draught Held or Meister Bräu for examples of the effect of oxygen in bottles. Both fabulous dark lagers on draught, absolute crap shoot in the bottle, often going cardboard-y well before expiry. Nice to see someone else share the sensible view that travel doesn't necessarily ruin beer. I've had bottles of Oregon beer shipped to me by way of Texas (nevermind!), by post, through German customs, and the beer's been Just Like It Is In Oregon. Also see Fred's recent high praise of barrels of Spezial in Sweden. And how well cask ale travels from England to Nürnberg for the Brau-Beviale. |
