Travel from Frankfurt airport to Bamberg

Did anyone try this travel alternative, and how did it work?
First buy a Bayernticket online and print it or download it to your DB app as a "Handy ticket". This can be done well before you travel.
At Frankfurt airport you buy a local ticket to Kahl and travel first to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, then change to a regional train towards Würzburg. The first stop in Bavaria is aforementioned Kahl so your local ticket ends here and your Bayernticket commences. No change of train required, I have been led to believe.
This way, the trip is about half an hour shorter than the one from Munich airport. Nuremberg is of course the closest airport, but the air fares to Nuremberg are often quite high if you need to make a transfer.
So, did anyone try this travel alternative, and how did it work?
