"German brewing doing what it does best" = "Slow road to irrelevance and extinction." Beer consumption in Germany is at a 20-year low, and the next generation of potential beer drinkers are bored to tears with what's on offer. Too many brewers make similar (nearly identical in some cases) styles. Exporting has worked for Belgian brewers, because of their diversity of styles and products. Exporting doesn't work as well for German brewers because of the similarity of styles and products. IOW: they gotta do something. It's kind of like how it was in the USA (or even the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, etc) around three decades ago. |
