Can't say i'm really interested in Franconians brewing 'new world' beer. Obviously pale ale has a long history but they are obviously seeking inspiration from the modern global trend. I don't go to Franconia to drink pale ale, I can buy it in pubs and supermarkets where I live. The beauty about Franconia is the traditional beer styles that showcase their raw materials and craftsmanship so beautifully, not dominated by citrussy hops that drown out all other flavours. Don't get me wrong, highly hopped beers are great in their place and I love hop bombs, but in the UK (and US and Europe) brewers are so obsessed with them that we are forgetting how to brew traditional styles of beer that arguably need higher skill to brew because they are more delicate and leave much smaller margins of error. US/Pacific hops are also expensive, driving up the cost of beer in pubs to frankly obsene levels these days. The irony is that many drinkers, especially Americans, love the delicacy of British ales, something that is becoming increasingly lost amongst the current trends. This is the way I look at Franconian beers; delicate and flavoursome, rarely to be analysed or discussed at some rate beer gathering but to be enjoyed at source for what they are. Pilsner was a trend once, and look what that did for the huge range of styles that was once brewed across the world. I don't want to see any of this in Franconia thank you very much ;) P.s It's further ironic to note that a friend who is interested in beer history told me that in the late 19th century US hops were completely disregarded by British brewers as inferior. This is more an indication of the quality of British hops and the styles of beer that were being brewed as oppose to the inferiority of US hops. Roll on a century or so and the British hop industry is all but dead and we are paying through the nose to buy oversees hops. Progress? Not for the Brits it isn't. |
