Funny you should mention the bikes-per-capita bit. Erlangen is the #1 German bike city with less than 200,000 people, whereas Münster is #1 among the largest cities. I've read that Erlangen has 2 or 3 (?) bikes per capita, but the average person has space to store only 1. Or something like that, approaching Dutch (if not Amsterdam) density. My wife got shoved by a cyclist on our very first day on our first visit to Amsterdam, FWIW. It was snowy, and we simply didn't see where the bike and pedestrian lanes separated. I was trying to suggest that while I do bike to the Bierkeller for fitness training, it might serve as a data point to estimate how fast others might travel, somewhere between a sporty and slow rate. I reckon Mark gets around by bike at a decent clip, having met him, and believing to recall that he's biked around here in the past. (?) On your point about exertion. I now find beer disappointing if I have *not* done some exertion on the way to drinking it. At least during the day...after 17.00 or so, all bets are off. Speaking of which, it's about happy hour here now. |
