"There's a gigantic price divide between decent or good Franconian lager (70 cents a 50 cl bottle) and these marketing experiments." Precisely. And not only in Franconia. Here in the Low Countries, you see exactly the same thing: de Struise (non-brewers AFAIK) charge twice or thrice what more conventional Belgian brewers charge, de Molen and Emelisse (both very good breweries) charge more for their "crafty" beers than the normal and so on. I was recently in New York and the local supermarket sold Stone IPA for $14/six bottles, while the much tastier (IMO) Goose Island Honkers Ale cost a mere $10 for six. It seems to me a number of breweries see the following forumla: craft=profit Which is not to say that Gerhard's point about prestige is not also valid. |
