Forward planning...Gravity Pour |

Well honestly I don't get around by bus, rather by bike, so my DIRECT experience is actually quite limited to non-existent. Find the fares needed by using the VGN website, which has a limited English version if you think that would help, but it doesn't provide the same level of information. Not sure how much planning I should do for you, whereas you should get acquainted with the system yourself. It's not really that complicated. I wager you would put a higher priority on places pouring ...sorry... serving beer without extraneous CO2. This I can and will gladly help with, of course. First off, the Schwarzes Kreuz Bierkeller in Eggolsheim pours the darkish Vollbier from the brewery of the same name and town. http://www.bierfranken.eu/biergarten-detail.php?id=220 open from 14:00 (10:00 weekends) in good weather. Using vgn.de von Hallstadt nach Bammersdorfer Straße 1, 91330 Eggolsheim, you see that the S1 will drop you at Eggolsheim Bahnhof, where bus 266 can take you to within a few yards of the place at 14.05, 15.35 and 16.35 (or walk the 25 minute level stretch). The system won't give me return options to Eggolsheim Bf, rather to Forchheim Bf which is then a 5T ticket rather than a 4T. But the bus schedule http://vgn.de/efa9/efa98/roccas/TTB/00003c49.pdf shows regular returns to Eggolsheim at 16.26, 17.26, and 18.26. Not sure what's up with that. The beer poured at the Brauereigaststätte in the center of town is the same but under CO2. I can't recall if Br. Först in Drügendorf http://www.bierfranken.eu/brauerei-detail.php?id=75 pour with CO2 or not, but the place is a favourite, though not well serviced by bus 220, as you have to call a day in advance to order it during the summer break which goes until mid September. Roppelt's Keller in Stiebarlimbach is easily reached by regular bus 265 service from Forchheim Bahnhof departing at xx.30, arriving 34 minutes later. Pale, hoppy Kellerbier squished from a 1000 L key-keg type bag system is not to be missed. Great Obadzda to eat as well, open 11.00 Fr-Tu, 15.00 We-Th. Walk the 1 km up the hill to the 3 Keller(s) on top of the Kreuzberg, and the one in the middle (Lieberth) will pour their Lager (or "Kellerbier?") under gravity. The other two have a relatively large range of beers, but under CO2. Open from 15.30 IIRC. Walk back down to Stiebarlimbach to catch the 265 back to Forchheim and hop off at the Kellerberg stop in Hallerndorf and spend an hour at the Lieberth Dorfkeller (same beer as above, but nice village Bierkeller) before hopping back on. Hop back off on a Saturday or Sunday at the Schlammersdorf Kapellenweg stop and walk to the Witzgall Keller hidden in the woods at the side of the road for the pale, bitter Landbier under gravity there. The Brauereigaststätte in town, OTOH, pours the sweetish Vollbier under CO2 and the Landbier is available bottled. The Löwenbräu Keller in Buttenheim pours the Löwenbräu Kellerbier under gravity, but it ain't as good as it used to be, I believe they cut back on hops a few years ago and the result is the butterscotch and apples aren't so well hidden away any more. It's located just outside Buttenheim, a 25 minute walk from the Buttenheim Bahnhof (which is actually located in the next door village of Alteldorf). Bus 980 runs from Bamberg ZOB as well but takes 69 minutes. http://www.bierfranken.eu/biergarten-detail.php?id=170 is the funny little Häschaadä Keller at the Autobahn crossing E-NE of the location incorrectly shown on the map has Kraus Lager or sometimes also Mahr's, both under gravity. It's a 1.4 km walk, though it looks like bus 281 will take you half the way there. Then of course there's Geisfeld with Br. Krug's regular and a regularly changing special beer (CO2) in the village center and the spectacularly located Griess Keller on the S edge of the village. http://www.bierfranken.eu/biergarten-detail.php?id=107 The pale, hoppy, and bitter Kellerbier is poured under gravity at the Bierkeller, but at the Brauereigaststätte in the village, it's under CO2. Bus 970 from Bamberg. The Brauereigaststätte of Br. Sauer in the next village of Roßdorf am Forst might pour a beer under gravity, I can't recall. Their lovely Bierkeller, unfortunately, pours under CO2 through not-often-enough-cleaned lines. Strullendorf's legendary Schwanenkeller http://www.bierfranken.eu/biergarten-detail.php?id=183 pours Löwenbräu under gravity and is an easy walk from the Bahnhof. The late John White raved about the place and I agree he was right to do so. That's enough for now, all south & southeast of Bamberg, but that's where I spend my Kellerzeit. Others can be of more help elsewhere. And of course many of the myriad other breweries in the area can also be reached by bus, but I won't profess as to whether any pour under gravity. |
