| Yesterday I heard another radio program about this E. coli outbreak. They were comparing it to previous outbreaks in the US. They said that one difference is that in the US they try to avoid even announcing there is an outbreak until they have much more information. It does more harm than good to make inaccurate announcements (e.g., that the cause is Spanish cucumbers when it is not). One big outbreak in the US was caused by undercooked ground beef while another was caused by jalapeno peppers in a salsa (but in that case they originally pointed a finger at tomatoes, which resulted in the destruction of 100 million pounds of tomatoes unnecessarily). I hope they figure this one out in Germany soon. |
