What is Kellerbier?

Nicely said, and good points. I also knew next to nothing about Kellerbier (and other less known sorts of beer found in Franconia, like ... "Lager" ;) ) before I *moved* here. I'd had Mahr's and Spezial U in Bamberg on vacation [Urlaub], and either could IMO be "Kellerbier" even if they're not called such, though of course the latter is served under CO2. (The former isn't as good as its fame makes it seem, and the latter simply varies too much, FWIW. IMO.) All I had ever heard of "Kellerbier" in my earlier years was how wonderful and rich this certain [gewisse] "St. Georgen Bräu Kellerbier" was supposed [behauptet] to be, from a couple of people whose opinions on beer I respected quite a bit. To me though, the bottles available in Oregon revealed just another brown, malty Lager. I don't remember them being outright *stale* or paper-y though. I'm not a lie-on-the-beach person either(*), give me A Bierkeller or a pub with a beer garden overlooking the rugged Welsh (or Oregon) coast instead. * Sorry, I'm "teaching" a lot right now, and I can't help myself, as this particular thing comes up All. The. Time.: um mit jemandem in einer negativen Aussage übereinzustimmen, sagt man im Englischen nicht "I'm also not a ### person" wie im Deutschen, sondern "I'm not a ### person either", oder ganz abgekurzt "me neither".
