Ideas for a trip to Bamberg & Franconia |

I have been lumbered with organising a trip for some friends (actually a CAMRA branch) in April. (Weekend of 10/11). Probably three nights, and two of the party have requested staying in Bamberg. If we fly on the early Air Berlin flight to Nurnberg we get a total of two full days and two half days. As we went last year, I plan to spend most of the day outside Bamberg, and then finish off eating & drinking there. It seems obvious to do a day on the railway line between Bamberg and Nurnberg and visit places like Forschheim, Hirschaid, Eggolsheim etc. Maybe a day on the buses (last year we went out to Memmelsdorf and Drosendorf only to find that Drei Kronen was closed for refurbishment). So a couple of questions: Is there anywhere fairly easy to get to that maybe I haven't thought about. Somewhere out by train in a different direction, maybe, or a bus trip. Or anywhere on the Nurnberg/Bamberg line that's a "must visit"? Secondly, the best value and easiest place for accommodation seems to be the Ibis (as my German is not really good enough for the telephone and my Franconian is worse). But breakfast is a little pricy at £9 a head. If we skip breakfast, will we easily be able to get something to eat early? What time does brotzeit start? Cheers, Phil |
