What exactly does "Zwickel" mean? |

Actually it goes back to the "Zwickelhahn". This is the tap to take samples from the lager tank. As the beer that is "gezwickelt" is an unfiltered beer, I can only assume that is has become a generic name for any unfiltered beer (however not being an "ungespundetes" or kellerbier). I guess it is more a marketing concept nowadays than something true to the facts (like so many other empty marketing phrases). BTW: how many ungespundete and kellerbiere do actually come from a "real" keller? (How many lager cellars do you know that are really a keller/cellar, not a room with lager tanks, sometimes even upstairs in the brewery?) |
