First time to Bamberg |

| Hello Mark, The "Kulmbacher Bierwoche" would certainly give you an alternative experience to Bamberg. It is a baby Oktoberfest, providing the same size beers (1L at 5.60 Euros 2006), good tasting food (I loved the chicken), and a live band playing the typical Oktoberfest-type music geared towards getting everyone to dance and sing (especially later in the evening when folks get a little tipsy). Earlier in the day it is not as crowded or wild. We loved it, though as mentioned, we are indeed Oktoberfest buffs. There is one main "tent", seating maybe 5,000+ people? Some of the larger tents at Munich's Oktoberfest can seat around 10,000. Four beers are available: Kulmbacher Festbier, EKU Festbier, Monchshof Festbier, and Kapuziner Weissbier. I found them all to be good, and I especially enjoyed the weissbier. You could possibly do what we did on a Saturday.....go from Kulmbach to Trebgast (15 mins? by train) and visit the Haberstumpf Brewery, which opens at 10:00am on Saturdays. Loved their Zwick'l beer. Then back to Kulmbach for a tour of the fortress overlooking the city (and Kulmbacher Bierwoche tent). Take the bus up. Easier than walking. Then down to the Bierwoche tent to start festing! *Note- we stayed in Kulmbach so no worries about getting to Bamberg while being a little tipsy :) Do you by chance have the book "Good Beer Guide Germany" by Steve Thomas? If not, get it before you go to help with planning. I've found it to be unbelievably helpful, especially when I was in Germany with no internet access. Very useful and informative. |
