The Future of good German bier in the US |

I worry about it...I see German style lagers and ales as a harder sell to the American consumer than American-style microbrew or exotic (and usually strong) Belgian beer. I see Paulaner and Spaten products selling fairly well and Schneider gaining some ground but small Bavarian and Franconian brewery beers are pretty thin on the ground in the US and when they are available they don't exactly catch fire in the marketplace. In Portland(OR.) the brauerei Sonthoffen beers are readily available but I'm not sure a lot of people buy them. What worries me most is that most Americans will never "get" the appeal of high quality German beer the way they "get" microbrewery IPA or Belgian fruit and lambic based beers. I was hoping at the start of the micro brew revolution in the US that we would see alot more high quality German style beer being brewed here, and while their was some at first there doesn't seem to be as much now. I just don't see an artisanally brewed German product gaining the kind of cult appeal as Chimay products have, for instance, unless you want to think of Aventinus as being that beer. Does anyone see a trend back to well made lager and wheat beer once America's fascination with ultra bitter beer subsides? God I hope so.... |
