Comparing Bland Beer

In my case, I never thought much of Augustiner Edelstoff, vom Fass or bottled, even back when I used to love Münchener beer. It has always been blander than the other Münchener Hell(s), since I've known of it anyway, only in the last decade or so. The fact that it's stronger makes me wonder if it's not intentionally brewed this way to get tourists drunk and parting with their money as quickly as possible...tourists that aren't used to flavourful beer. You mention Spaten Hell -- this I find more flavourful than Edelstoff and would prefer a Mass of it at the Viktualienmarkt over the Edelstoff. There's this whole mystique about German beer. Yes, it's nearly all "better than" nearly all macro-lager produced elsewhere in the world. But just because it's German doesn't mean it's great! Has Edelstoff always been as ...erm... subdued in its flavour profile as it is now? Was it different, say, 20 years ago?
