While biking in Britain might not be very attractive, there is always walking. In fact, there are ramblers organisations and public footpaths, some of which have been there for hundreds of years (see Powell & Pressburger's film "A Canterbury Tale" for an example). I went to the GBBF a couple of years ago and took a break to go to the The Bell pub in Aldworth. I took the train from London to Goring-Streatley (lovely old villages with lovely old pubs) and called a taxi from the station. After dropping me off at the pub, the taxi driver suggested I walk back over the public footpaths. It was about 5km. Unfortunately, I didn't have a map with me nor was the signposting very good, so before getting back to the villages, I found myself back on the roadway. Fortunately there was enough of a road shoulder to make walking safe. The Bell is really a classic old pub and the beer, served as real ale was delicious. You can read a bit about it here: http://www.walking-uk.com/bellaldworth.htm After I got back home, I found this: http://www.goringgapwalks.co.uk/The%20Bell.htm On the train back to London, I asked a train conductor for platform information. He answered me, then asked where I was from since I don't have a British accent. I said Amsterdam and he said "Me too!" We then had a nice chat in Dutch which I'm sure made him a bit homesick. I would be happy to do this again, and even found a pub walking guide for this area (Berkshire) on Amazon UK for one cent (unfortunately, the shipping cost to the UK brings the total price to £2.81)
