A more than just drinkable beer at Steinbach in Erlangen! And a wet/fresh/green hop beer at that! Yes, indeed, after nine years of living in Erlangen, the local brewpub, Steinbach, have put out a very drinkable beer, rather than one you just *can* drink. They alwas have their Storchenbier on CO2 tap, a murky, bland, unfinished-seeming blond "lager" reminiscient of Widmer "Hefeweizen" in Oregon. Typical of modern German city brewpubs like Barfüßer. They also have a rotating second beer. In the last couple of years, they've dared to brew something as ground-breaking as a Saphir-hopped beer (though that hop variety's been on the market for quite a few years IIRC) and other similarly hop-themed beers. But they've always been barely hopped enough to notice that they're supposedly specially hopped, and always disappointing. And the recent "Erlanger Pale Ale" was basically a clearish Hefeweizen - bananas and malt, no real pale ale character. Until now. The new Hopferla (fränkisch - "hoplette") is decently hopped with green Spalter hops. It's actually bitter, and not simply husky/astringent from poor mashing, but really, actually, truly, well-hopped. I'd never have guessed that it's *green*-hopped however, because Spalter are simply not that stand-out-ish in nature, nor is there that much in flavour or aroma, like one would expect from a green-hopped beer. IOW, it's a decent German pale ale: German malt, water, hops, and assumedly yeast. The guy working there was sure it's obergärig rather than untergärig (Braumeister not there), and it seems too well finished to be a lager brewed only a month ago. If only they'd used Polaris! I'm beside myself. I'll have to go have a couple of 2-litre bottles filled. Gerhard, you should get a Holzfass for the Yanks' visit. The annural Hopfenpflücker Pils from Pyraser is barely a decent Pils, let alone does it demonstrate any level of hoppiness in flavour or aroma that would suggest it's also a green-hopped beer. These brewers just need to take a crow-bar to their wallets when it comes to hops. |
