Better, so my opinion, are some "Wieß". These are unfiltered versions of "Kölsch". But it isn't allowed to name these beers "Kölsch" because a "Kölsch" has to be filtered. Sometimes You find "Wieß" in brewpubs in Cologne (Dom, Peters, Hellers, Braustelle). The Braustelle names it "Helios"; Helios is also availabe in bottles (p.e. bierkompass.de). The name "Wieß" is similar to the southern German "Weißbier", but is brewed with barley malt not with wheat. The Pinkus Alt from the Brewery Pinkus is also a "Kölsch" in the sense of the beer style. But in Germany it isn't allowed to name a beer "Kölsch" if it isn't brewed in Cologne. |
