I've been using swing tops (Bügelflaschen) of various sizes here. The regular 1/2 L, but also 1 L and 2 L -- the latter you can buy full of undrinkable Prussian "Dampfbier" for 14€ in supermarkets. The Dampfbier goes down the drain (or used for cooking), the labels come off the bottles very easily, and then after a thorough rinsing, into the oven at 60-70° for a while to sterilise them. Also very nice are the 3/4 L swingtop Italian prosecco bottles, dimpled at the bottom. These offer a perfect serving size in a Masskrug--they way Gott intended 3.2% abv hoppy pale ale to be drunk! Agree with Mark on bottling--I've never had a bottle burst. I've just received packets of the Nottingham and the S04 (London?) yeasts for my next batches. I plan to brew tomorrow, and then hopefully again on Friday. And I've got a batch to get into bottles today. I just picked up two sacks of malt (Pilsener and pale ale) at Weyermann yesterday. The prices for this year's harvest are up 30% on (*) last year's! (A 25kg sack costs 39 € instead of 30.) They were at least apologetic about it. (*)Yank practising proper British use of prepositions...doesn't come naturally. |
