Ok, a few additions and observations. Additions: a longish but enjoyable trip with Don & Co. to Hartmann in Wurgau. This is another fairly upmarket establishment but very friendly and welcoming. V. nice beer and food. We also made a brief visit to Abseits - sorry we couldn't have made more visits but it was a bit off the beaten track for us this time. However, very much liked the Greiss that was on offer and which partially made up for not being able to visit the brauerei. Also must mention the visit with Don & co. to the Spezi-keller - of course, most rleaxing and good fun - we tried to find the legendary Hubner in Stilbruch but no sign. We had a mad-ish hour in Griesgarten - excellent stuff whoever makes it, and also took a leisurely stroll to Bootshaus one pm - certainly worthwhile, to enjoy the view and the beer from Weiher (which was closed when we tried to visit). Observations: my reactions to Bamberg remains as always positive. I know now the pubs that I like, so tend to concentrate on them. I still believe that the addition of so much CO2 in some venues destroys potentially good beer, though I have learned that leaving a seidla for a few minutes helps to dissipate the worst effects. If Mahrs, the two Dillers, Wagner - plus a few others - can manage to serve straight from the keg, don't see why the rest can't. I believe it is a combination of apathy and commercial pressure. As I remarked, our fewo in Dorfleins was excellent (aren't they all?) but it was a bit far out for visiting too many out of town brau's by public transport. Believe me, I spent hours calculating bus times and cross referencing to ruhetags but, sadly, the two times that we ventured far were dismal failures. I don't know the perfect solution but, certainly, a fewo near the ZOB is a starting point. As a matter of interest, we stopped off in Ely, Cambs for a couple of days on the way home. I can seriously recommend the Prince Albert where we enjoyed great pints of Bateman's XXXB and something from St. Austell, which name I can't recall. Both 'real' of course and not a bit of artifical CO2 in taste! Next trips: Germany, it must be back to Eschawo; and it's about time we actually went back to UK on a beer trip. Oh and then there's Belgium! |
