I have not had any problem walking with the Fritsch map; even the obscure path down from the Altenburg is marked. I also made a five day walk in the Fränkische Schweiz without major problems. You have to be a bit careful though with the varying itinerary symbols painted on trees (and marked on the map). For the Schesslitz-Würgau hike you start with a blue MD sign (for Main-Donau-Weg) to the Giechburg, then horizontal stripes white-yellow-white into Ludwag, yellow cross on white north from Ludwag until you join the horizontal white-red-white path into Würgau. To make hikes a bit more adventurous, and to save on paint, marks are generally only painted on one side of the tree, parallell to the path. This means you don't see them until you are next to the tree. This can be a little annoying at crossroads, so you need to keep an eye on the map at all times. This year, however, I plan on bringing a GPS device prepared with POIs/waypoints from this site. |
