| hello folks, my name is Michael and I live and work in Boulder, Colorado. Professionally I work in software and in my spare time I serve as developer for Ratebeer.com. I've been reviewing beer and places for over 10 years on the site. my account is http://www.ratebeer.com/user/6533/ One of my bigger projects was the places map webapp: http://www.ratebeer.com/beermap?p=0&z=11<=4989870&ln=1090070 and I have my hands in a lot of the site design and a lot of the new features in the last few years. I host travel photos and some beer travel writing on my own site at http://beertravl.com and at http://www.flickr.com/photos/michaeljames/ the beertravl site is incomplete given I don't have a lot of time to talk thoroughly about each place. I also have a few map applications in development now, including a Zoigl Calendar maps which visually represents open stubes based on selected day/week ranges. I've home-brewed in the past but it's not something I ever felt passionate about, though I would like to start some German-style recreations at home. I first visited Germany in 2006, Franconia two years later, and now I try to get back at least once every year. I tend to favor clean, balanced, low-to-moderate gravity beer and I find myself very sensitive to malt texture. Not that I don't enjoy beer across the spectrum, but I tend not to favor the sweet, strong and very-hoppy beers that we have here in the United States. I'm blessed to live in a state which has a tremendous selection of imports to keep me excited, as the constant show of big/boozy/experimentation (while cool to have around and sample) does not invite regular drinking. I'm an old-school ratebeer member but I find the scene does not generate the level of discussion seen here, which is why I decided to stop lurking and start contributing. I'll be back to Franconia for an 18-day stretch starting in a couple of weeks, with a 5-night detour to Vilnius, Lithuania in the middle. I'll have to start cross-posting trip summaries here.
