Franconian Beer Message Board

Please review my Bavarian itinerary and provide comments

Hello everyone, I hope you’ll forgive me ‘cause this is going to be a pretty big post. My trip to Bavaria is in a couple weeks and I was hoping the experts and insiders here would be willing to have a look at what I have planned and offer their comments. A couple things to bear in mind are: • We have a car and will be sharing the driving so no one who is drinking that day will be behind the wheel. • My friends and I favor malty and yeasty ales and avoid lagers and, in particular, pilsners. So, if any of the towns / breweries I have listed are at odds with that criteria I’d appreciate someone letting me know. • While it’s true that this is primarily a beer drinking trip we do also make an effort to see whatever castles or picturesque towns that may be in the area. We will in fact pass up a great brewery that may be in one of the more modern / industrial towns in favor of a good brewery that’s in a pretty or historic town or a town that feature a castle nearby so, again if any of the towns / breweries I have listed are at odds with that criteria I’d appreciate someone letting me know. • Lastly when considering the following you’ll notice that on any given day there may be as many as a dozen breweries listed that we may go to. Naturally no sane person would even attempt to drink at twelve different breweries in a day. What I’m doing is providing all the candidates so you folks can help us determine which one or two, using the criteria above, we’ll actually stop at. Ok so here it is… Day 1: We fly into Frankfurt, pick up the car and head to Aschaffenburg where we’ll have look at the palace and the Pompeii house and then try to find Hohenwart bei Mespulbrunn which, if I understand the website, features a brew pub in the woods called Hohe-Wart-Haus. If anyone has ever been to this place and can offer comments on how easy or difficult it is to find I’d be very grateful. It looks like in order to get there you have to locate a dirt road off of a main road so it may be that we just skip this one rather than spend all day looking for it. We’ll then head down to Miltenburg which is, according to reports, a lovely little medieval town with two good breweries. After Miltenberg we go to Wurzburg where we’ll spend the night. After checking into our hotel in Wurzburg there are three towns nearby that I’m considering for a very brief brewery trip (not all three, we’d select one) they are; Rothenfels am Main (Bayer Brau), Marktheidenfeld (Martinsbrau) and Homburg am Main (Homburger Brauscheuere). Any suggestions? Day 2: Leave Wurzburg and head towards Bamberg. Potential places to stop at before and /or after checking into our hotel in Bamberg are; Monchsambach (Brauerei Zehender), Ampferbach (Brauerei Hermann), Grasmannsdorf (Brauerei Kaiser), Debring (Brauerei Muller) Weiher (Brauerei Kundmuller), Bischberg (Brauerei zur Sonne), Hirschaid (Brauerei Kraus), Eggolsheim (Brauerei Schwarzes Kreuz), Weigelshofen (Brauerei Pfister) and Hallerndorf (Brauerei Gasthof Rittmayer). Day 3: Today I have two castles scheduled; Burg Zwernitz and Burg Rabenstein. If anyone has ever been to either of these and can offer comments re: whether or not they were worth going to that’d be great. Potential brewery trips heading from Bamberg to the castles and back again are; Ross am Forst (Brauerei Sauer), Oberleinleiter (Brauerei Ott), Aufsess (Brauerei Rothenbach), Hochstahl (Brauerei Reichold), Breitenlesau (Krugbrau), Oberailsfeld (Held-Brau), Pottenstein (Brauerei Hufeisen), Hintergereuth (Stockel-Brau) and Huppendorf (Brauerei Grasser). Day 4: Today I have us leaving Bamberg and heading up to Coburg to see the fortress (anyone ever been there? Is it worth going to?). Potential brewery trips heading from Bamberg to Coburg and back again are: Dorfleins (Brauerei Eichhorn), Kemmern (Wagnerbrau), Ebensfeld (Schwanen-Brau), Loffeld (Staffel-Brau), Wiesen (Brauerei Helmuth), Memmelsdorf (Brauerei Drei Kronen), Merkendorf (Brauerei Hummel & Brauerei Wagner), Wurgau (Brauerei Hartmann), Schammelsdorf (Brauerei Knoblach). Day 5: Today we leave Bamberg and begin heading south towards Regensburg where we’ll spend two nights. Potential places to stop along the way are; Forcheim (Brauerei Greif & Brauerei Hebendanz), Amberg (Brauerei Bruckmuller, Brauerei Winkler, Schloderer Brau and Brauerei Sterk), Wiefelsdorf (Weissbierbrauerei Plank) and Kallmunz (Zum GoldenenLowen). So that’s the (potential) trip between Frankfurt and Regensburg. After Regensburg we continue to make our way south until we reach Munich and four days later fly home from there. I won’t bore you with that leg of the trip because this is a Franconian message board and I’m assuming that those of you reading this most likely have no interest in things that far south. If I’m mistaken please let me know ‘cause I could use some help firming that final stage up. ALL comments, critiques and criticisms are welcome. Thank you in advance for any assistance anyone may be able to provide.
