Crawl - All Four Landbierparadieses in Nürnberg & Fürth

It just occured to me to do a "pub" crawl of all four locations the other day. Yesterday's weather and timing (Mrs's work) worked out so that I did it yesterday. As anyone familiar with Landbierparadies knows, they feature a single wooden barrel (Holzfass) from a small Franconian brewery (I suppose "small", up to and including the likes of the Buttenheimer breweries?) on the bar, and a good range of decent bottles to choose from. And basic Franconian food.

From Erlangen by S-Bahn at 17.44 to Fürth-Unterfarrnbach, cycle the 700 metres or so to Landbierparadies Hexenhäusla. I was greeted with a notice that they had begun serving their own beer, but figured this meant it was brewed for them somewhere. Inside, Schübel dunkles Kellerbier was on, which was nice enough and washed down a respectable Rinderroulade.

Whilst I was eating, they changed the barrel and explained it was their house beer, "Schwarzer Igel", Black Hedgehog, a Schwarzbier. And they said it was brewed there, on site, on either of the 50- or 200-litre Braumeister systems they got last spring. I'd never had beer from a Braumeister system, and my heart sank a bit on hearing this, as I figured it would be quite home-brew-y.

No, in fact, it was excellent, and would go on to be  the best beer of the day, by a long shot. I wondered if it wasn't a porter, "top-fermented", but the brewer wasn't there to discuss it, and the lad hefting the barrel said it's a Schwarzbier. I do like the Hexenhäusla, I think we'd only been in once before, a few years ago. I'll be back more often now. (Another couple of photos here and here.)

I wonder, though, whether the first barrel was left over from the night before. It didn't seem flat or even approaching sourness, as I've encountered with barrels left over night before. But they opened at 17.30, and I highly doubt they poured 30 litres in the hour before they changed barrels. Or maybe it was a smaller barrel.

Back to Unterfarrnbach, down into the U-Bahn, connect to the U2 line at Plärrer, then to Nordostbahnhof and cycle the few hundred metres to Leipziger Straße 32 and the just-renovated-for-a-million-€ fourth Landbierparadies location. Love what they've done here, though I'd never been to see its previous incarnation. Wagner Bräu (Merkendorf) Dunkel was on, and it was excellent. I had to cram in with a table of retirees, as the place was heaving, at least for a Monday.

(Veggies, take note of their decent menu.)

From there back to the U-Bahn, only to find it closed from 21.00 due to engineering works (scraping the rails). So into the replacement service bus with my bike, as it was cold, and I didn't want to bike the several km to the last two locations. But I did bike from Rennweg, where the bus ended and the U-Bahn resumed service.

We'd been to the Wodanstraße location years ago, when it was still half-smokey. Smoke-free, it's a lot more enjoyable. Sadly, the Hummel Kellerbier was too sweet, quite a let-down from the previous Dunkel(s). From there, a km or so to Landbierparadies in Stertzingerstraße, where I'd never been before. Lovely old tavern, but sadly, the Reichold Dunkel was a mess.

From there to the nearest U-Bahn station, to the Hauptbahnhof for the last train back to Erlangen at 23.46.

So while it started out great, it was leveled out by lame beer in the end. Staff at all four are exceptionally friendly though, efficiently served as you'd expect around here. A worthy way to spend an evening, but the travel time between locations is long enough so that you can just manage to get four locations in between opening at 17.30 and the last train back...if you're tied to that last train, anyway. They open at 14.00 or so on Sundays.
