Re-dispensed Beer

The Grim North. For those that aren't familiar, maybe you could explain what the autovac system does? "Return-to-barrel" is a pretty clear hint, but do you know exactly how this autovac works? I'd heard of this before I saw it in use at the King's Head. When I was there, I had a half of something, and thought it tasted and felt a bit odd. I hate to say "metallic", because that's too easy, but it just seemed a bit "off" in some way, and very lifeless. Then I watched the bar maid pull a pint (on one of the handpumps) for someone. She pulled a couple of times without the glass under the nozzle, letting the beer run down the trough. I could see a plastic hose from under the trough running back into the darkness under the bar, and this hose twitched when as she pumped the beer engine. Then she filled the glass. I then realised it was one of those "vacuum" systems I'd heard of to suck the overflow from the trough back into the barrel. I was disgusted. I'm *still* disgusted, a year and a half later. I think next time I'm in Huddersfield (and there WILL be a next time!), I'll pop in and order something nitro and tell her why I'm not ordering cask, despite being a CAMRA member. (There was a nitro stout that looked quite interesting when I was there.) But now I'm confused about you. You're a Northerner, a Mancunian. That's well north of the Great Sparkler Divide that splits the country into north and south, somewhere south of Nottingham...but you don't like sparklers or swan necks? Why you people (well, not that you live there any more)
