| At the beginning of the month, we stayed in Ebermannstadt for a couple of days, and, with good weather, we rented bikes and headed to Heiligenstadt. First of all, I had found a place to rent bikes on the Internet, but, since we were four people, to be sure, I sent them an email well before we left. They told me to just drop by when we arrived. We did. I highly recommend them: http://www.autohaus-hoelzlein.de/ Other then me, none of my party spoke German, but three of them went into the garage with a mechanic (who didn't seem to speak English), but with sign language, they managed to communicate. IAC, the service was outstanding. Each bike was checked, tires refilled and seat-height adjusted before we left. The lady in the office, before I even had a chance to ask, told me how to return the bikes after their closing time (18:00). Back in the garage, I showed the mechanic the bike map on my iPhone (it's called PocketEarth, and I highly recommend it) and he told me some "shortcuts." The bikes, btw, cost €9/day. The ride was outstanding! There was for about 90 percent of the ride a dedicated walk/bike path. We had planned to go to Heckenhof, but, unfortunately, a range of mountains lay between us (PocketEarth doesn't show topography, but they are working on a topographical map). As we headed back to Ebermannstadt, no one wanted to end the day early, so we wandered around a bit and found a couple of nice places to stop. All in all, we enjoyed it so much, I expect we'll do this again next year (though in a different area). |
