| I didn't say that it was impossible to get non-meat food in a Franken pub, only that the choice is hardly comparable to that available to a carnivore. The 'plate of side dishes' really comes down to the vegetables that accompany meat dishes and I'm not sure about the fine cheese dishes, apart from kasespetzl (spelling?) and similar. Without wishing to ruffle any feathers, Germany is not the greatest country in the world for cheese - just compare with France, Belgium and even UK. I haven't gone into specialist cheese shops but have looked extensively in the supermarkets. There was also a specialist cheese stall on the market by the ZOB that had a reasonable range and we sampled a few but there was nothing really remarkable. The lack of German cheese variety (and I'm not allowing copies of other country's cheeses here) is something that has always puzzled me, given Germany's huge dairy industry. For example, we've never been able to find an indigenous hard cheese, though I assume that they must exist. (Now stands by and waits for flack to start flying!) Don S may like to comment because he was with me in all those pubs when we often struggled to find something and he was tucking into mountainous plates of meat - didn't begrudge it him and Cherie, because they were great company and the beer was the main purpose of our visit. As a slight aside, as I have commented before, there seems to be an historic difference between German and UK pubs - German pubs offer an all round eating and drinking experience (except for veggies), while the British tradition is to go into pubs to drink, with food very much an optional extra. |
