I'll try not to make this too long! Just returned from latest visit, this time staying in the rather remote (if you don't have a car) location of Dorfleins - a lovely place but with very restricted public transport and a big hill! However, it does have Eichorn and Diller Keller. Opening times at Eichorn take a little getting used to, especially when they decide to close because Bayern Munchen are playing - get a big screen and more customers! The pils and lager are good and the atmosphere and service friendly and relaxed. Recomended! Diller Keller is a lovely experience, situated on the edge of the forest, on the lower slopes of the Kreuzberg (just how many Kreuzbergs are there in Bayern?). Very friendly people, good food, excellent beer (Brauerei Honig, Tiefenellern), reasonable prices and a great atmosphere - caught a free jazz concert one Sunday - lovely! Can also really recommend the fewo we stayed in. We managed to make one contact with one forum member and failed with another (Nick - never got your email). Met up with Don S and Cheri and his friends, Richard, Debbie, etc., etc. and had a great time. As some forum members will know, Don has a great knowledge of beer in general, speaks excellent German and was extremely generous to a pair of old crocks, ferrying them around the country! This contact really made our holiday - thanks forum! Of course, we did all the Bamberg regulars and will really miss Spezial, Schlenkerla and Mahrs, which had the usual grumpy service inside but the usual great 'U' - answer, stay in the garden or schwemm. Sorry doubters, this is the among the best beers in the area and no gas! High point probably was the visit to Becks in Trabelsdorf. Not just the Elevator and Zoigl but the atmosphere and friendliness of Andreas and his staff. I hope that he manages to find a more regular location for his work. Another localish venue that we really enjoyed was Wagnerbrau in Kemmern. Don and Cheri had not been there before and I know that Don really liked both the pils and schwarzbier, as we did. Same afternoon saw us visit Hertlein in Staffelbach, where we sampled an excellent lagerbeer. Sadly had to move on as the ladies were getting a little chilly but later managed to fulfill a long held ambition (sparked by the late John White) by getting inside Goldenen Lowen, Hallstadt. I totally agree with John's view - this would a national treasure in most countries. It is now run by Mrs. Diller (also owns Diller Keller), a most hospitable and charming lady and, like the Keller, serves excellent beer by anstich from Honig. Sadly, Frau Diller explained that she had no one to take over the pub and she is no longer young. Any offers? It would be a tragedy to lose this characterful and historic venue - oh yes, there is a disused brewery attached. Sounds like I'm talking myself into something here! We had two rather abortive bus trips: the first was on the only really rainy day we experienced and was to Stegaurach. The Stegaurach brau was very closed (in spite of it not being the ruhetag), likewise Muhlendorf (opening too late for the return bus). Second trip was to Memmelsdorf/Merkendorf. We'd already sampled the Stoffla in Drei Kronen (thanks to Don and co) - very tasty, so we went into Hohn and had the Gorchla, also very good but both places a little too modern and upmarket for my tastes. So then we walked to Merkensdorf. The weather was quite hot and most of the walk is uphill, great preparation for several beers, but then the dreaded unannounced ruhetag struck - both braueries closed! Disaster, saved only by Don inviting us out to Beck's. Ok, I'll finish now and leave oberservations and conclusions to another posting. Only to say we also liked Mainlust - my kind of pub and managed to get into the St. Georgen place in Hallstadt, which now only operates as a beer keller - very good beer. More later! |
