Any Annafest reports?

I visited Annafest for a few days last week. The weather was brutal (38 degrees on one day) but cooler in the forest at kellerwald. I intended to get out to Kreuzberg on this trip, but I didn't fancy being out in the open countryside in those temperatures. Here's a few thoughts on the fest: * Afternoons are best times to visit, although some of the kellers don't open up until about 1PM. In the evening, it turns into more of a rock fest with beer. But there are some quieter family-based kellers. * One litre measures everywhere. Krug was the only place offering 0.5 litre seidlas. One day, fancying a change from the one litre measures, I visited Neder and asked for a Schwarz Anna. The waiter promptly opened 2 bottles and poured them out into a maas...get the idea? * Greif keller was the best beer, IMHO. I also liked Eichorn. The others seemed to vary from day to day. But with one litre measures it's hard to retain a clear palate, anyway. Or a clear head. * Food was good and cheap. Freshly cooked, so you might have to wait 20 mins. * Beer was very expensive. 6.50 Euros was the going rate. * Crazy pfand system. Other fests I have been to, you *always* get a token when you pay the pfand. At Annafest, I never once received a token. Sometimes the 6 Euro pfand was waived, for example at a family keller in the afternoon. Other times, you were reimbursed directly by the waiter, or when you handed in your maas at a pfand desk. Several times, I ended up paying 12.50 for a drink. When the sun goes down, keep your wits about you and check out what pfand system is in operation. * I used to really like the Hebendanz export from the brewery on Sattlertorstrasse. On this visit, it was vile. I wasn't asked to join a smoker's club, it looks like they needed the passing trade. Neder next door had a good keller bier from the wood, at 1.80 Euro. Greif seemed to be shut down (permanently?) Eichorn opened 2 hrs a day during the fest. An interesting fest, worth a visit for the setting and the big fest experience. But on balance I don't think I will make it a regular on my calendar.
