| Hi Mark and Nick. Not really. Is that right about the original strength of IPA? I know that the brewing records are available, so do we actually know what the strength was and what the stuff actually tasted like? I'm happy to be informed. I can only tell you what I remember from my distant youth - the IPA that we drank then was was not that much different from any other bitter beer - perhaps it was a bit stronger but, to be honest, no one bothered much about such things, it was just good or bad beer and we drank it on that basis! You have to recall that, in my youth in Manchester, we had the choice of many different breweries (and pubs), all selling cask conditioned beer. People had their favourites but generally on the basis of close proximty to home, work, etc. Incidentally, very few people in Manchester drank bottled beer in pubs, perhaps only the odd bottle of Guinness or a 'brown and mild' (light and bitter was a southern drink). Even at home, we used to take a jug to the pub outsales and get it filled with real ale - happy days! |
