Franconian Beer Message Board

Thanks for the input, Barry. I do take my beer very seriously (don't we all?), but if my geekiness ever reaches a point where it negatively affects those around me, then it would be sensible for me to take a step back and have an honest assessment of myself. But I think most of those who know me understand that I am far less rigid than some of these posts might suggest. I simply enjoy delving and analyzing every aspect of a beer when I drink one (especially the mouthfeel and aroma, two often disregarded but equally important components of a beer), and if that is annoying to some, it's unfortunate. A cynic will be a cynic, and I find it unnecessary to indulge in that kind of energy. Despite Franken being my favorite place on Mother Earth to drink beer, my comments on the predominantly sub-par quality still stands. In my experience, issues with inconsistency and a seemingly outright lack of brewing competence, are encountered more often than not in my experience. But because these kinds of things are subjective, I am not gonna try to make a case by stating what many folks on this board might very well love, is actually riddled with flaws and wrong to enjoy. For example, the Dunkles Lagerbier at Kathi-Brau - a positively foul beer tainted with a popcorny/husky malt and yogurtlike yeast - was wholeheartedly enjoyed by a local during my last visit, who was sitting at the same table. While I was unable to stomach more than a half a gulp, it would be entirely misguided, and, frankly, quite mean if I were to pontificate how wrong it is for others to derive enjoyment from such a beer. I simply walked outside discreetly and slaked the thirst of the ground with my beer, and left as if I enjoyed the beer. Now, I won't deny that I become a bit discouraged when I see so many patrons gleefully lapping up something that I am finding lots of flaws in (consequently asking myself-- how can the brewer NOT be aware that the beer tastes like vegetables or fusel alcohol or grain husks, in a land where the art of brewing has surely been perfected over centuries? And what if people and brewers are NOT noticing this? What does this portend when it comes to the future of our beloved beer paradise?). But that's simply because I hold so much love in my heart for this blessed land and its beer, and visualize something much greater that's perfectly attainable. Hopefully this lends a little bit of clarity and makes at least a little bit of sense. :-) |
