I just came across this nice piece whilst googling for German articles on mashing processes: http://www.sg-waldrast.de/assets/14zoigl.pdf Some nice photos of the Kommunbrauhaus in Windischeschenbach, though one is of a depressingly small amount of hops being added to the kettle for 30 hl! I was wondering why some Yank homebrewers use the term "Vorlauf" to mean either "recirculation" or "runoff", when in reality, the term means "supply flow". The part of the runoff recirculated back into the the mash at the start of lautering should really be called "Umlauf", if one *has* to use a German word to sound cool or whatever. Kids these days! I've heard brewers refer to the draining off of the mash from the Läuterbottich into the copper (Brau- / Sudkessel) as "abläutern, "ablaufen", or "herablaufen", of course, but I can't recall hearing discussion of the recirculation. Jos? Ah, here I see the infamous "nappy/diaper" as lauter filter being recommended for homebrewers: http://members.aon.at/spurx/Seite_2.html (German innovation at its finest!) I met some homebrewers at Brau Beviale who said they use a towel for this...I was speechless. Anyway, the article does refer to "Vorfilterung" (pre-filtering) which isn't a bad description, I guess. But "Vorlauf" is really the wrong term in any case. |
