Peter, I can't argue with you on the technical points -- I've long since forgotten what chemistry I ever knew :) But from from what I see and taste: there seems to be a serious problem with foam -- half the time it seems they are filling pitchers with foam and letting it settle. That does effect the taste. And even when I try the kegs beers that I know and love they do taste different to me. And I noticed before I knew they were dispensing with compressed air. You say it doesn't matter if its served fast enough -- maybe I'm just drinking the slow moving beers. To me its not about tradition (I realized CO2 tanks are a relatively recent invention) but about respect for the brewer -- if a beer was brewed to dispensed a particular way, one ought to respect the brewer by dispensing it that way. I am not a big fan (in most cases) of using nitrogen mixes, but in cases like Guinness where the beer is designed with that in mind, it is required. I guess what bothers me the most is that CAMRA is very big on defining dispensing methods for "their" beers but totally disregard it for somebody else's. Now if I really cared about it I'd get off my lazy butt and go to the CAMRA AGM and make my voice heard. But I'm lazy and its easier to whine (or whinge) here :) |
