The traditional British mid-size brewers are struggling to stay afloat, and in the case of Young's, compromised heavily by packing it in at their original Wandsworth site and combining brands with Charles Wells of Bedford to from Wells & Young's. Fullers is the last remaining traditional London brewery; meanwhile, give credit to the likes of Meantime for brewing both traditional British styles and 'continental' beers too. Brewers will do what they feel they have to in order to survive. The 'Spoons operation is interesting, because the chain is still relatively successful, even during increasingly tough times for the trade overall. The pubs straddle a line between modern and traditional, attracting young people who are fine with drinking standard bogfizz from the lager taps, while still keeping some decent real ales on for those who like them. Not sure it's fully comparable to, for example, the Memmelsdorf places though; those places seem to me rather more all-encompassing, family-friendly, and perhaps up-market than a typical 'Spoons pub. Beer is important to the likes of Drei Kronen and Höhn, obviously, as they stock nobody's beer but their own, but they don't brew significant quantities; both places number their output in the mid-hundreds of hectolitres (for those used to US measures, a hectoliter is about 0.85 of a barrel, or about 26.4 US gallons). By comparison, Mahrs in Bamberg cranks out about 18000 hl annually, and export-minded Kaiserdom is a relative giant in the region with 250000 hl. |
