Updating on a rainy day in Bamberg |

| Mostly the weather on this trip has been okay (today being the exception). Had 4 good days in Bamberg to start out. Hung out with some old friends. Got a tour of the military from my friend Josh that is stationed there. Went to the Kellerwald in Forcheim with a group of 10 people on Saturday and had an excellent day visiting three different kellers. Staying in some countryside hotels worked out in some cases and in others did not. Willersdorf was excellent as was the day spent at Roppelt's and Kreuzberg. Ran into Nick at Roppelt's (shocking I know). Reichold in Hochstahl didn't work out since they decided to close for Urlaub on the same night I had a reservation. Doors were shut. So I drove down the street to Rothenbach in Aufsess (now wish I had gone to Krug in Breiteneslau but I didn't think of it until it was too late). Managed a visit to Kathi Bräu then Schroll in Nankendorf the next day. Liked them both a lot. Aufsess beer was bland though but they put the roof over my head so no complaints. Had a nice day in Geisfeld and I thought the weather was great however Griess and Sauer did not think so and so the kellers were closed. Still I enjoyed lunch and Braunbier at Sauer and the beer at Griess brewery before deciding to head into Bamberg to spend the rest of a beautiful early evening at Spezial Keller. It was one of the nicest visits to Spezial Keller I've experienced. Then had fun drinking with some locals at Stöhrenkeller before catching the tail end of the beer tasting at Cafe Abseits with Nick, Jimbo, and Gerhard. Sorry I just missed you Gunnar. Landgasthof Buettel in Geisfeld is quite nice and the folks running it were very friendly and helpful. I would stay there again. If the weather is no good it's a 20 euro taxi ride to Bamberg. Eschawo/Neuhaus with Jimbo was brilliant. I will never skip a visit to there in any future year. It's a must. It was one of those situations where you completely lose track of the time because you're too busy enjoying yourself. The beer was excellent, the people delightful, the atmosphere was like nothing I've ever experienced before. ... and just when you thought you couldn't possibly have any more fun there was yesterday's tour with Juergen which probably deserves a post of it's own. The highlight of this was the keller in Wettelsheim. It was a perfect evening and I really enjoyed the liter of Märzen along with the spectacular view at this keller. Thanks again Juergen and also to Elmar for driving. So now just enjoying a nice quiet, rainy day in Bamberg before heading south for a few days tommorrow. I just had lunch at Abseits and I think after a quick nap that a Rauchbier in the Schlenkerla Schwemme is in order. |
