Of course! Wow, I'm staggered by that range - think I'll have to get over to the homeland soon. Do they have a good turnover of beer? I assume that they use 4.5 or 9 gallon barrels, as it would be impossible to maintain quality using something like a standard kilderkin (18 gallons) unless there was either a good turnover or they used some no-no technique like a cask breather. In my small to middle-sized pub, we sold four real ales: Courage Best, Directors and John Smith's Bitter and Wadworth 6X, stored in kils. From memory, we sold around 6 kils a week, so were able to achieve a decent enough turnover. But, occasionally, the 6X got a bit chewy, as it didn't sell quite as well as the others. The Star (one of my all time favourite pubs) in Bath was famous for its draught Bass (not so common in the 1980s), which it sold direct from a barrel, which was kept behind the bar. The problem was keeping it cool enough, so they used a refrigerated mat placed on top of the barrel and, I think, a cask breather. I seem to recall that the quality was a bit variable. |
