Barry, as one who resides in the USA and has a keen sense of history, I certainly agree with the notion that borders are artificial constructs. Look at maps of the USA and Canada, especially in the western expanses, and how many state, provincial, and national borders are nothing more than arbitrarily drawn straight lines. In my corner of the USA, far too many people put too much stock into the utterly phony division of Oregon and Washington as separate states, in spite of the obvious fact that they have far more in common than any arbitrarily drawn border would suggest. Historical maps of North American and Europe only serve even more to show how fluid borders are. They're constructs of the mind. In light of things like the trans-national project that resulted in the Elevator Doppelbock, as well as Mikkeller's trans-national brewing projects, and the collaborations between American craft brewers and De Proef in Belgium, show just what can happen when people think outside of their own border-drawn enclosures. Mind you, I still have great respect for the traditions and beer cultures of given regions, but those regional traditions will be respected and treasures regardless of borders. Our recent discussion of the Grätzer beer style serves as an excellent example. Whether the region was/is in Prussia, united Germany, or Poland, it's the beer culture that remained constant, and if the style is ever revived successfully in its home region, it's not going to matter much where the border is. It's been just a bit more than two decades since a nearly uncrossably impenetrable border separated the two cities associated with the Gose style, after all.
