Barry I think your either not comprehending or twisting my words up a bit. I said: "Sure the milds and bitters AS YOU KNOW THEM have had their extensive heyday" and what I mean by that is the versions of them during the 20th century. I guess what we would consider the normal strength cask mild or bitter of this time period (i.e. less than 5% and very mild in terms of hop levels). I was drawing a distinction between them and the far more decadant versions of the early 1800's that were much stronger and hoppier in many cases. Anyhow, no need to belabor this part of the argument because really the part that provoked me to respond was the use of the word "Americanisation" in relation to the glorious and pristine English beer culture. Yes I know you didn't use the word glorious or pristine. I've added them for affect but the implication is that this lesser, undesirable, uncouth American culture is ruining your superior, purer culture that has already been in place. As if it were not possible for British people to possibly have come up with the idea of a Choclolate Stout without the infection of Imperialist American ideas. Not to mention ghastly kegs, variety of choice, and shock and horror - making a profit of all things! Sorry for the sarcasm here Barry. I know I've exagerrated but I've gotten a little more than a bit weary of Europeans blaming most things that they perceive in the world as negative on America, Americans, Americanisation, etc. Sure I'm being a bit sensitive to it but I think it's getting way overplayed. I mean think about it. Some people decided to open a nice steakhouse and brewpub in Bayreuth an suddenly German brewing culture is on its way to being Americanised. A bit much I think. BTW the use of the term "craft" beer was not started in the US as a marketing ploy. It was started as a way to identify these new beers that we're being brewed that were not Budweiser, Coors, or Miller and these new beers were desperately needed and ultimately welcomed because our brewing culture (thanks to prohibition) was destroyed. Do they cost more than a pint of Budweiser? Sure but they are worth more than a pint of Budweiser, cost more to brew, etc. If "craft" has become a marketing ploy in the UK then I'm sorry to say that I think this is then also an invention in the UK because that was not it's purpose here. Are people making money in the US by brewing and serving a variety of keg beers instead of the old school industrial lagers Absolutey and more power to them! I want them to make money because money in addition to passion for beer is what is fueling the beer renaissance that we are having here and I think it's fantastic. Never a better time to be alive in the USA for a beer lover. Otherwise,I respect and share your admiration of tradition and hope that survives along with the new wave stuff. I hope you don't take this reply as being angry or argumentative because it's not my intent. I'm just being open and honest in this discussion with you and it's something that is really hard to convey through an internet discussion as well as I would like. |
